What to wear now and later: new season dresses

Ok let’s get down to the business of the new season…and dresses are still a massive trend. Printed, midi and ideally with a nod to the 70s and then you’ve got it sorted. Wear now with trainers and sandals and then layer up with knee high boots, roll necks and leather jackets or blazers.

The Buffet Dress

Zara totally nailed this floaty, tiered look in the spring (now christened the ‘buffet dress’ on Instagram thanks to its usefulness to hide post-holiday excesses). Here are a few new options in store now:

Printed Dress £49.99 Zara

Yes this is the spot dress but re-imagined in an animal print. It’s bound to be a hit and a best seller. Watch out for its own Instagram page too before too long.

Floral Print Midi Dress £59.99 Zara

Absolutely love this dress which is flowy but styled with a belt is just as good – if not better.

Long Printed Dress £49.99 Zara

This is another style from the SS in a different print.

Now other retailers have jumped on the bandwagon too:

Yoke Chuckon Midi Dress £49 Topshop

Already out of stock in a number of sizes, coloured animal print is big for AW.

Paisley Smock Dress £49 Topshop

Be prepared for paisley as part of the homage to the 70s. Another one that is low on stock online so you’ll need to hurry to get your hands on it.

Little Leaf Tiered Midi Dress £65 Warehouse

An easy mono print that is very wearable.

The Waisted/Tied Midi Dress

If shapeless isn’t what you’re after then go for a style either with a waist seam or a tie. There’s definitely a huge 70s vibe going on this AW season so the prints and colours are rooted there.

Long Sleeve Kensington Shirt Dress £75 Hush

This is one of their best selling styles in a gorgeous new print for the coming season.

Elodie Printed Midi Dress £99 Hush

Super 70s thanks to the print mixing.

Geo Button Detail Midi Dress £55 Warehouse

This is a great print for the office. White boots – probably marmite but I’m a lover.

Floral Leopard Midi Dress £52 Warehouse

This looks very modern paired with the black blazer and another key item for the AW – the knee high boot.

Geo Scarf Pleated Midi Dress £59 Warehouse

Chanel the 70s by layering a polo underneath along with the knee highs. And yes it’s the white boots again. This is already showing as low stock in a number of sizes.

Irina Midi Dress £140 Gestuz at John Lewis

This is a new brand to John Lewis this season and one which has some great prints. The tie is removable so you can choose how you wear the dress but it’s on trend colour combo is perfect for now and then later with black footwear/leather jacket and roll neck. The picture doesn’t do it justice.

Wild Flower Gathered Dress £160 Jigsaw

Now this is a gorgeous print, well worth the investment. It has a drawstring waist so you can easily cinch it in or wear loose. Looks fab with simple white sneakers or dressed up with heels.

Diana Dress £285 Gerard Darel at John Lewis

If you need a dress for a special occasion, then this is the one. Just beautiful with a lurex thread running through the print.

And that is how to do transitional dressing.
