That’s how I roll… knitwear to cheer you up and keep you cosy

I am broken. With every screechy, shouty episode (of which there have been more than I can possibly count) my two year old has pushed me closer and closer to the edge and now over it into an exhausted, fraught abyss. And now, I fear that the only way out is through alcohol. So today is the day that my resolve and my dry January will probably also be broken ( I am currently eating raisins in a rather frenzied fashion to stave off temptation, but it is only a matter of time). Because I am a better parent when I have a glass of red wine coursing through my veins. In short, my patience and tolerance levels soar and everyone benefits.

In the absence of this alcohol induced glow, I am going to have to turn to an alternative to make me feel warm and fuzzy: knitwear.

This week’s fashion fix is most definitely a game of two halves but there should be something for everyone. So starting off with something to lift the mood and brighten up these chilly days, and that is the slogan jumper. Sports luxe is the name of the game so pop on some trainers with these bad boys and rock the look. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a gym bunny to pull it off.

First up is this from Hush which most definitely points towards warmer, sunnier times when styled like this but will still work for now if you swap the trainers for some ankle boots: C’est Si Bon Sweat Top £50.

Now Boden is not the first place you would think of to go for this but lo and behold there are two options and the My Cup of Tea £59.50 is my preferred one because grey looks better with blue denim. Not such a fan of this all blue look.

If you have a bit more buck to spend then Zoe Karrsen is the Queen of the Slogan and Very Exclusive has a number of different options including a couple in the sale and much more financially appealing. You Are A Peach sweatshirt half price in the sale at £70 .

There is definitely a fine line between funny and ironic and inappropriate and try hard. The Topshop ‘Lady Garden’ sweatshirt probably falls into the latter camp (hence why it is in the sale) and you definitely need balls to wear this. But it did make me chuckle. If you like the look but don’t love the slogan, then go for a plain sweat like this one from Topshop Raglan Clean Sweatshirt by Boutique £45. You can wear a chunky statement necklace with it no problem to girlify the look.

Chalk done, now for the cheese with turtle necks. A totally different look, and one which you may be all over if you are feeling the pain of this cold snap. But the good news is that they are definitely not just golf club, they are a full on fashion must-have.

Go oversized with these cashmere Turtle Neck sweaters from &Other Stories £125 and pair with skinny jeans or a skirt. Generally, if you are going to go for volume on top, I would say you need to keep the bottom half sleeker and beware if you are petite as you may just look like you are a bit lost in someone else’s clothes.

If you don’t want to spend cashmere money then there is a Turtle Neck Sweater in a wool/silk mix for £65.

Alternatively you can go for a closer fitting style. Make it contemporary by pairing with boyfriend jeans or a pair of slightly cropped, tailored trousers.  Cos has this High Neck Wool Top £55.

Zara is always good for stocking up on basics and they have this Polo Neck Sweater at £19.99 in a range of neutral colours including navy, light grey, charcoal and cream.

There is also a Stripe Polo Neck £19.99 which would kill two trendy birds with one proverbial stone.

Banana Republic has this Pima Cotton/Cashmere Roll Neck £45 as an online exclusive. For work you can easily wear with a pencil skirt or go for a full midi skirt for a fashionable evening look.

A knitted roll neck with a bit of texture is also lovely like this Fifer Textured Roll Neck Knit from Reiss which is in the sale at £95. Very nice over leather look/coated jeans.

They also have this Beatrix Cable Knit Sweater half price at £60 .

I generally have a bit of a personal dislike for short sleeved knitwear. What is the point? If you want a sweater, surely you want to be warm? But it is the cropped bit of this style that is making me feel quite drawn to it. Either with a pair of skinny coated jeans or a boyfriend jean: High Neck Top £22.99.

One word of warning: there are a lot of tight, ribbed, roll necks around and unless you are pre-pubescent, I would approach with caution as you need to be two-dimensional to pull off the look. It doesn’t work for us three-dimensional types with flesh on our bones.

Actually two words of warning, if you are generously proportioned in the boob department and/or have a short neck, tight fitting roll-necks are not the best thing for you. Go drapey and looser and you can still work the look.

Unbelievably, the raisins have worked. That, and my husband arriving home to put the kids to bed. Although now I think his dry January may also be coming to an abrupt end.
