The May Workwear Edit – Top of the Class

It’s an irritating fact that at this time of year, retailers seem to think that normal life ceases and that all we do is go on holiday or swan around at weddings and events. While we might do a bit of that, we still have to go to work – usually to pay for the above! But finding suitable things to wear to the office can be tricky as floaty, floral numbers dominate. So here are some tops for every budget to keep you looking smart and stylish this summer.

The Woven Tee

Simple, smart and a style classic, these woven tees are perfect under a jacket or worn by themselves.

Silk Round Neck Tee £179 ME+EM

This is out of stock in a number of sizes but worth keeping an eye on for when it is back in stock and also seeing if stores (including Selfridges) have any. I find ME+EM is generously cut so you may need to size down.

Silk Rib Cuff Tee £179 ME+EM

A slightly more modern and sporty take on the above which comes in soft white, blush and a bubblegum pink.

Jax Short Sleeve Pleat Detail Top £95 Reiss

This comes in navy as well as the ivory.

The Smart Jersey Top

Sometimes all you need is a tee – but not any old cotton tee, a smarter, drapier alternative like these:

Sinitta V Neck Silk Jersey Tee £95 Reiss

This also comes in a wine colour and is ideal under a jacket.

Stretch Cowl Neck Tank Top £50 J Crew

This comes in several colours – black, navy, white, blush and pink and is an easy win. Just ignore the naff styling as with trousers and a jacket this is a no brainer.

The Sleeveless Top

Reiss has a number of good styles in at the moment but these are my favourites.

Juno V Neck Top £95 Reiss

This comes in off white, a lovely deep raspberry, lemon and peach and has a lovely neck detail.

Lena Bow Detail Top £95 Reiss

In a lovely lightweight silk, this has a pretty tie bow detail at the back neck. It looks great tucked into wider legged trousers and also comes in a pink.

Cecily Silk Button Detail Top £125 Reiss

A gorgeous blue shade that is perfect business wear for the summer but just be aware that these notch neck styles don’t sit particularly well under a jacket.

Drapey Tie Neck Sleeveless Top £67 J Crew

If the American retailer is not somewhere you normally go, then do as they are good for workwear staples like this blouse which comes in black, light blue, orange and ivory. As well as a polka dot.

Delphine Top £49 Hush

This is another good option for a simple v neck top that you can dress up or down. It comes in black and off white.

The Lace Top

Lace is always a nice way of adding a bit of interest to your office attire.

Deco Lace Shell Top £35 Oasis

This has a plain jersey back so you can easily dress this down with denim as well as popping on a blazer over the top.

Lace Top £25.99 Zara

Lovely sleeve detail on this style.

Lace Tee Shirt £15.99  Zara

This needs a little jersey cami underneath (M&S do a good flesh coloured one) but another one to spruce up a tailored trouser.
