Utility – the hot new look

When you think of the word utility, it is probably swiftly followed by the word bills (boring) or room (actually one of my favourite rooms in the house so maybe that makes me middle-aged and/or boring) but it might not be something you associate with anything you want to wear.

And that is where you are wrong because the utility look is everywhere and far from being scary, there are plenty of eminently wearable pieces out there to choose. In its easiest guise, this means embracing all things khaki which is perfect for the spring.

Hush Military Jacket £75

An easy way to add in a spot of utility styling into your life is with a casual jacket for the spring. This will certainly solve your layering conundrum for the inbetween-y weather.

Loose Fitting Jacket £49.99 Zara

Much more feminine in style, this will be lovely with denim for the spring.

Khaki Striped 4 Pocket Jacket £129 Mint Velvet

Possibly the best of both the previous styles, this is a real goodie.

Girlfriend Chinos £ 75 Hush

As the weather warms up, it’s time to stop being exclusive with your denim and to look at other trouser options. The chino is a great alternative for the spring and summer and can easily be smartened up by your footwear and what you pop on top.

Paperbag Trousers £19.99 H&M

Another great style that you can easily wear casually with a tee or style up with a nice top and shoes for the office.

Paperbag Trousers £25.99 Zara

These are in a lovely drapey material and so are smarter than the H&M version.

Grosgrain Stripe Slim Crop Trouser £129 ME+EM

These are a great trouser that you can dress down with a sweater and trainers for a casual look or pair with a cream blouse and heels for the office.

Chino Shorts £45 Hush

If you’re heading off to warmer climes over Easter then it’s time to make sure you’ve got a good pair of shorts and these are they. Lovely with white broderie tops as well as easy tees or simple camisoles.

Satin Pleat Midi Skirt £39 Topshop

If you’re after a skirt then this is a beaut. They call it gold, but it is most definitely not!

V Neck Dress £34.99 H&M

A khaki shirt dress is the epitome of utility chic and this one from H&M is just as good for the office as it is for holidays. Cinch in the drawstring if you want to create waist shaping.

Dress with Pockets £29.99 Zara

For an easy chuck on summer style, this dress has it all.

Reiss Military Detailed Midi Dress £265

Utility doesn’t just have to be for casual dressing. This is absolutely gorgeous and would be perfect for the evening as well as special occasions and even work.

It’s time to lighten up and get with the khaki vibe.
