I love a bit – actually a lot – of sparkle but quite frankly, the shops go mad when it comes to this time of year and you can’t see the wood for the bling. It’s just too much. While we might need the odd sparkly piece in our wardrobe, what we really need are clothes we can wear everyday and it seems to me that retailers forget that real life continues and Christmas jumpers look odd 364 days of the year.

So what you need is something that says Christmas/party/evening without looking like the Christmas tree that your children have decorated … I give you the star. Printed or embroidered, it’s a great option that you won’t feel self-conscious in once the decorations are gone.

So from the going out out, to the staying in in, here are lots of starry options to help you feel festive whatever you are doing.

If you need a party dress then there are lots of starry options around. I love this one from Topshop but can’t seem to find it on the website. It is a navy lace with stars embroidered over the top.

Whistles has also gone star-mad and has three or four different dresses but I like this Aria Star Embroidered Dress £185 best.

Or at Monsoon you can tick off a couple of birds with one stone with the Starina Jacquard Dress £69 which is a midi length (tick), velvet (ticket) star print (tick) dress.

There is also this Star Patterned Lace Dress £29.99 from Zara which would be nice with black tights and ankle boots and is a bit more low key than the other two styles.

On the top front, at Warehouse there is this Ditsy Star Shirt £39.

It also comes in a black base. Both of which you could wear during the day to work and then jazz up for the evening.

For a much more casual feel, Mango has this Stars Striped Shirt £25.99.

But if it’s going out that you want then Whistles has this Star Embroidered Blouse £109 which you could pair with a bottom of your choice from jeans to culottes, a chiffon or (p)leather skirt.

Hush’s Devore Greta Top £85 is new in but already sold out in 6-8. Their matching dress is also sold out in all sizes apart from 16. With a cuffed trouser and a pair of heels this is a lovely look.

However, they do have the Albany Devore Cami Top £65 in all sizes except 16 and I have to say, this is my preferred style. A v neck is incredibly flattering for most figures and this will look great under a leather jacket or longline blazer.

You can do a star print sweater in a non-evening way like this Autograph Pure Cashmere Star Print Round Neck Sweater £109 from M&S.

And like this Stella Jumper £79 from Hush which comes in several different colourways but there is only stock in Small and Medium in this colour. All the other colours have stock in all sizes. This is great for wearing with joggers and a leather jacket if you are having an at home type of day but still looks good with jeans/trousers and boots as they have also styled it.

They also have the Ziggy Jumper £89 which I prefer.

Or you can do a little bit more sparkle and make this your Christmas jumper – Sachi Shimmer Star Knitted Jumper £79 from Phase Eight.

Monsoon also has this Luna sequin Star Patch Cardigan £65 which is a nice amount of sparkle for every day.

And if you happen to be pregnant and want a little bit of sparkle, how about these MAMA Skinny Ankle Jeans £39.99 from H&M. Annoyingly they don’t seem to do these in their non-maternity range as I really fancied a pair.

But Monsoon does have these Iris Star Pint Jeans £59 which are actually very nice in the flesh and the stars are a silver foil print.

For something very cosy M&S has these Star Print Joggers which are actually for kids but if, like me, you are not particularly tall, then the bigger ages may work for you.

And don’t worry if all this is a bit too understated, then I will also be covering a more full-on approach to the festive season so watch this sequinned space…
