Boring in black
There is no need to feel boring in black, in fact summer black outfits are often one of my go-tos. So here are a few tips to stop your outfits from feeling flat:
Texture
Even if you are wearing a simple cotton sundress, adding some texture in the form of straw/raffia can be very helpful – think about espadrilles or straw bags and the contrast of the lighter raffia against the black will really lift your look.
Metallics
They work with everything and the sheen is perfect foil for a flatter outfit. A gold buckle on a belt, a gold sandal, gold jewellery… Quite often black really needs jewellery particularly if it isn’t really the best colour for you. Wearing a necklace over a high necked black top will soften the harshness of the impact.
Animal print
The great thing about an animal print, be that leopard/zebra or snake etc, is that it combines different colours, often both light and dark. So again the perfect way to lift a darker outfit but it also can really draw multiple elements together. It can create a stunning contrast so whether that is a bag or shoe, consider adding some into your life.
Tan
Classic, timeless and the ideal colour for summer accessories, definitely get some tan in your life. A tan block heeled sandal or court shoe is the ideal summer work shoe; a straw and tan mix bag; a casual tan sandal. Tan will work with your whole wardrobe because it’s a colour that sits in the sweet spot that is neither too dark nor too light.
Colour
And that doesn’t necessarily just mean brights. Black is a neutral so it will work with everything – so if you want to go neon that can be the perfect statement; but equally if you prefer a more muted look then chocolate or burgundy will look super chic.
This old reel will hopefully show these in action.
And if you are after a summer black dress then here are a few different current options to consider.
