If you’re not happy with your wardrobe, where do you begin?

So where do you begin?

You’ve got a wardrobe full of clothes and you’re not happy with any of it but where do you start?

Well, whenever I am with a client, the area I tackle first is their bottoms because they are the key to unlocking any wardrobe’s potential.

I guarantee you that if you have the right styles – and crucially a variety of styles – then this will make all the difference.

Variety is the spice of life

Don’t fall into the trap of only having one style of bottoms in your life. Quite often I will see clients with only skinny jeans in the wardrobe and that is where the problem lies. It’s not that the jeans style is necessarily the issue, it’s that there isn’t anything else to mix things up.

So if I can offer one piece of advice that I would urge to to listen to, it’s this: a variety of styles, length as well as colours and washes on your trousers and jeans will really make all the difference.

What you choose is entirely up to you and will depend on your shape as well as your style but the good news is that there are so many options out there to choose from. It’s not like a decade or so ago when we all wore skinny jeans simply because there weren’t any other options. Now there are wide legs, straight legs, barrel legs, full length styles, cropped styles and so much more. Yes barrels and wide leg silhouettes do dominate but you can still find other shapes.

But the real thing is that having different shapes means you can play around with proportions and different pairings. You can’t create interesting and varied outfits with only one shape on your bottom half. So don’t limit your options.

There’s more to life than jeans

You might think you only need denim in your life – because you only need casual outfits. But I would challenge you to think again. Casual trousers or even smarter trousers that you can dress down with trainers and a simple tee or a sweater will help to mix things up. It’s not about having more things in your wardrobe, it’s about changing the balance so that you have enough variety. 10 pairs of the same style will be so much less helpful than having 5 different styles.

And the great thing about high low dressing is that you can easily mix smarter pieces with more casual ones to create contemporary looks that strike the perfect balance and achieve the holy grail that is ‘smart casual’!

Where to next?

Once you’ve got the bottom half sorted, then I would look at your footwear and outerwear. Footwear is always a key category and an area that makes or breaks an outfit. But so too does having the right jackets and coats.

And then, and only then, would I drill down on the top half. Because you can do so much even if you only have a couple of tees/tops & knits. But if you don’t have the other pieces of the jigsaw in place first, then it doesn’t matter how many pretty blouses you own or how many knits are bursting out of your drawers, because the bottom half is what’ll kill the outfit every time.
