Sometimes the best pieces are the ones you don’t even see!!
It might sound counterintuitive to talk about items that you can’t see, but I would hazard that these are the ones that will end up being the best money you spend and the pieces you wear the most over the course of the autumn/winter season … because really when it comes to nailing the art of layering, it’s about layers that don’t add any extra bulk but that keep you warm and comfortable while still looking polished.
So here are my top secret layers:
1. Thermals
My lace edged thermals are worn on repeat. Historically I bought these from Intimissimi but at at £50 a pop they are not cheap (unless you live in Europe, in which case they are nearly half the price). However, M&S has a similar option for £28- they have sold out super quickly so worth signing up for stock notifications and pounce when they’re back in!!

However, Wardrobe 44 has a lace edged camisole which is another great alternative and will also be the perfect top for wearing for a night out. Or Boden has a similar option.
My other favourite thermals are Uniqlo’s Heattech with cashmere which I also wear daily when the temperatures drop. They have different necklines available and lots of colour options.

2. Hidden Puffas
I’ve waxed lyrical about these for years and years now but these gilets and puffas have tabs you can use to fold the neckline down so they are hidden underneath your jackets and coats. Incredibly lightweight, they fold up to nothing and are ideal for traveling and dealing with temperature changes.
But this year Uniqlo has added a couple of little details to the jacket so it’s now a piece I’d happily wear by itself. Amazing what a little grosgrain trim and some patch pockets can do!!

You can see this in action on Instagram or LTK.
This jacket will be the best £50 you spend and the gilet version is great for style with slimmer sleeves which can’t fit another layer under. They come in lots of colours too.
3. Secret leggings
Another Uniqlo special but these are lightweight and ideal for popping under your dresses and skirts to extend them beyond the summer while still having bare ankles. Hitch them up so they remain hidden and stay toasty in the process!!

What would you add to this list? I’d love to know your go-to items and which brands you think do them best.
